Bean There, Done That

This may seem like a healthy veggie dish… but as my mom reveals, all is not as it appears.

Chinese Green Bean Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of green beans, ends snapped off and cut in half
  • Oil for deep frying (that’s right)
  • 1 tsp Pickled kohlrabi (found at your local Asian grocery store)
  • 1 tsp Dried shrimp (ditto)
  • Garlic
  • Soy sauce
  • Salt & pepper

Instructions

  1. Soak the pickled kohlrabi and the dried shrimp in a cup of water for 15 minutes before starting
  2. Deep fry the green beans in oil for a few minutes until it starts to slightly brown
  3. Drain the oil and but leave a little bit in the pan to cook the rest of the dish
  4. Sautee the pickled kohlrabi, dried shrimp and garlic in the oil
  5. Add green beans, soy sauce and salt/pepper to taste
